the moon // overview //

An old loving cowboy and a tireless, crafty traveler and their journey to put the moon back in the sky. This story has a sense of magic that is inspired by looking at everyday things from a new perspective. It uses classic Americana characters and is rooted in many positive messages that all generations can relate to.

Here is an overview of what happens in the Journey with the Moon.

The story opens with a young, shabby traveler filling up a burlap sack with stars he has plucked out of the sky. He straps his glowing bag of stars to the end of a stick so he can see on his journey back to the kingdom.  On his way down the mountain, he sees a sliver of light flickering in the valley, he’s curious, so he travels to it. When he arrives he meets an old loving cowboy who had been tending to this “sliver of light” called the moon for years. The young traveler had never seen anything like it. The cowboy gave it oil everyday so it would glow, however his oil was running out and the moon was dying. Understanding this dilemma, the young traveler looked at his glowing bag of stars and had an idea. He pushed one of the stars into the surface of moon and it started to glow brighter than ever before. They filled the moon with the rest of glowing stars until it was nourished and brought it back to life. The light stretched across the valley all the way to the kingdom and to the edges of the Castle.

They realized they had to get the moon to the top of the mountain where they could easily put it back in the sky so everyone could enjoy its light.

The majority of the story takes place on their adventure to the top of the mountain with the moon. The moon’s cumbersome size, unexpected weight and beautiful glow will create stunning scenes and interesting interactions with the cowboy, traveler and environment. The team work to overcome obstacles along the way have the potential to be humorous, enduring, challenging and surprising. During the journey up the mountain the moon will develop character of its own and bonds will be formed with cowboy and traveler. We have provided frames that define possible scenarios.

The piece ends with the cowboy and traveler exhausted on the top of the mountain with the moon. After years of tending to the moon, the cowboy is sad because he has to say goodbye. He looks at the moon in the distance and gently touches it (through perspective) and it reacts. He realizes that he can pick it up with his fingers so the cowboy gently grabs the moon places it in the sky to live among the stars and provide light to the kingdom.
