In Memory Of was created for Getty Images “Big Idea” film competition in 2006. Out of hundreds of entries, it was a top 10 finalist & toured around the world with other contestant entries.

synopsis //

“In Memory Of” utilizes the power of imagery and storytelling to change the truth pertaining to an historical event. It convincingly tells a fabricated story by using trustworthy entities such as a story being passed down generations and archival footage.

This makes you think about how the past could have unfolded when it comes to world history, while also addressing the malleability of everything that documents our past and present.

what is your definition of a big idea? //

A “big idea” is a concept that effects your life, world and culture.

Our life, world & culture is influenced daily by a larger “hand” filtering, altering or re-interpreting events & selling them as truth.  In our film, we take two entities that hold the powerful vernacular of truth, the voice of a war veteran passing on a story to his grandchild and archival footage, despite the powerful combination, the content proves to be false. “In Memory Of” shows how the malleability of photography, film and memory, can lead to the deception of truth and therefore the deception of history and self.

We begin to significantly alter the content of the archival footage through new context and overt manipulation. The level of visual manipulation is relative to the historical manipulation of the story.  The concept of this piece is portrayed on two levels; one with the content of the piece, and two, with the questions left in the mind of the audience.

“In Memory Of” taps into how the unreliability of memory through the use of the voice over and the tacmanipulation of photography and film can lead to the deception of truth and therefore the deception of history and self. We will

demonstrate how dangerously easy it is, through strategically placed words and pictures, to alter the truth pertaining to an historical event. The malleability of documentation & memory.
